Paranormal VS Supernatural

Welcome to the 13 Days of Halloween

This week’s blog posts will be a three-part series. Each post will be a “vs” feature where I will be pitting two similar icons of Halloween against each other and see who comes out on top. Although I will have my decided favorites going into this series, I’m also keeping myself open to the possibility of being pleasantly surprised and possibly swayed by whatever information I dig up. I hope you enjoy and welcome you to weigh in.

Part 3 of 3:

Paranormal VS Supernatural

Yes! There is a  difference between the two. And in this post we will take a closer look at these two words that hold some definite “creep factor”. First things first, however, I want to give definitions of the two before we proceed. For this, I’ll being turning to good old for assistance,

of or relating to the claimed occurrence of an event or perception without scientific explanation, as psychokinesis, extrasensory perception, or other purportedly supernatural phenomena.

of, relating to, or being above or beyond what is natural; unexplainableby natural law or phenomena; abnormal.

of, pertaining to, characteristic of, or attributed to God or a deity.

of a superlative degree; preternatural: a missile of supernatural speed.

of, relating to, or attributed to ghosts, goblins, or other unearthly beings; eerie; occult.

Alright, so, in this post I’ll be taking a look at these two phenomena. I’ll break things down by doing the following:

  • similarities
  • distinct differences
  • a good fashion ghost story

Although there is some overlap of the two, I could find no substantive facts. Therefore, with my similarities category being thwarted, I shall share this bit of information instead.

  • The term ‘paranormal was first introduced in the early twentieth century to replace the more loaded term ‘supernatural, originally used in its Latin form supernatural is by theologians in the thirteenth century to refer to the miraculous events documented in the Bible.

So by this statement, one might determine they indeed mean one in the same. On the other hand, para means “beyond, past, by” and super means “to place or be placed above or over” thus paranormal is “beyond normal” and supernatural is “above natural”. Maybe I’m over-simplifying things here, but . . .

Distinct Differences

  • phenomena that can’t be scientifically explained–yet
  • might be scientifically duplicated someday to understand how “it” works
  • parapsychology: investigation of paranormal and psychic activity
  • examples: extraterrestrials, UFOs, psychics, cryptids, bigfoot

  • phenomena that can’t be scientifically explained–ever
  • goes against all natural rules
  • supernatural phenomena often is connected to religion
  • ghosts, goblins, or other unearthly beings

Lady of the Island

by Alton
(Majuro, Marshall Islands)

I’ve heard the story so many times before from people of Jaluit, Marshall Islands usually from old folks and relatives visiting us. I thought it was nothing but stories to fill in the boring parts of a lengthy conversation between adults. My family is from Jaluit who moved to the Capitol City, Majuro, Marshall Islands back in the 1960’s, and I have never been to Jaluit before until recently.

In May 2007 I was sent to Jaluit to manage the newly established village bank there, and as someone who was suppose to be logical in all my thoughts I was a true critic of the supernatural. Until I decided I was going to hunt wild pigs in the island of Ajjej En at Jaluit atoll. I was told that Ajjej En was recently evacuated in the late 1990’s because of the lady of the island, “Yeah, the same lady I’ve heard stories of growing up.” And to top it off she was related to me by blood; she’s like my 3x great-grandmother from my mother’s side. It is told her haunting started when her eldest son conjured her up from the grave by using the dark rituals of putting food and God knows what other stuff on her tombstone.

Anyway, one day I decided I was going to hunt wild pigs roaming around the island. My plan was to head out the following day early in the morning by boat. So I went to my place to make ready for my adventure, then I noticed a bottle of vodka left by one of my visiting staff members from our headquarters in Majuro. It was about half inch filled from the bottom, so I decided to drink it. Not long before I started having all these mixed emotions of anger and humor just rushing through me; one second I was crying loudly and one second I was laughing my lungs out. What amazes me the most is I only drank half an inch from the bottom of that bottle, and I’ve drank vodka before. I knew it took more than that to alter my thinking this much. I was so drunk it was like I’ve emptied two bottles of vodka (I should know because I’ve done it before in my wild college years.)

Before I knew it I noticed a shadowy female figure entering my mind . . . cont. to read here.

And the winner is . . .

For this one, I’m going to have to say–tie. My reasoning is that they are both chock full of “creep factor” . . . and that’s good enough for me.

Until next time . . .

Happy Haunting
